King Alfred was the youngest of six. He had four brothers and a sister. In any royal family, the chance for the sixth child to become the monarch was very slim. He likely did not even think he’d become king and was probably planning on entering the Church.
This is awesome... this family were literally my English ancestors through my ggggr grandfather, Lord Cheshire. There are so many heroes and even saints among the first English kings, House of Wessex. Honestly, it is a bit intimidating!
Glad to read about these events and people. I’m writing about an earlier time (a century or two earlier, just before Gregory sent his delegation of Romans to the Saxons) and lack of detail permits more latitude in portraying genaeologies and events. I myself only trace directly to William’s brother (and thence to Adam as the chronicler claimed).
I suspect I have some Viking blood, wonder which side I would have been on!
Great post. I've always thought of Providence as residing at the intersection of Preparation and Opportunity. Both must be present ...
